Psalm 145 Bible Journalling
Here are some ideas we have put together so that you can explore some of the themes Psalm 145 talks about. This psalm of praise, attributed to David, is written as an acrostic poem, with each verse beginning with the next letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The psalm encourages us to remind each other of God’s qualities from one generation to another.
You are welcome to think and pray about these questions in any way you wish. You may like to write or draw a creative response to these prompts.
Read through the psalm slowly and think about what verses you are drawn to.
Perhaps you might like to share your response with us…
Verses 1-3 Extolling God’s Majesty and Giving God Praise
Praise God
David commits to blessed God “every day” “forever and ever”.
What feature of God could you praise Him for today?
Would that have been different yesterday?
Might it be different again tomorrow?
Think about the ‘name of the Lord’…
How many ways could you complete the phrase…
“God is my…… when …..”
Our God is a Great Big God
God’s greatness is “unsearchable”.
What part of God or God's actions are you searching/ longing to know more about?
Do you feel frustrated if you don't know something about God?
Could that turn into awe and wonder about how amazing God is?
Verses 4-7 Passing our Faith to the Next Generation
Pay it forward
“One generation commends your works to another”.
Is there a specific person who passed their belief in God to you?
How did they do that?
Was there a certain action or conversation?
If you could thank them for the blessing they gave you, what would you say?
You could pay this act forward.
Have you been able to pass the good news of Jesus on to anyone?
Do you pray for that person?
Would you like to pass on your love of God?
How could you do that? Perhaps you could create something which is full of God's love and give that to someone?
The wonder of God
What wonder of God do you think of the “glorious splendour of your majesty”?
Could you describe it, or draw it, or write about it, or pray in thanks for it?
Verses 8-9 Reflecting on God’s Character
Qualities of God
The Lord is “gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love”.
Which of these four qualities would you like to experience more or develop more deeply in your life?
Could you write out the quality as a word and decorate it as a reminder to pray for God to bless you in that way.
God is good
“The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.”
Where have you seen the goodness and grace of God?
Could you give thanks for that in some creative way?
Verses 10-21 God’s Kingdom of full of Sustaining Grace
Offer it to God
“The Lord upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.” What burden, stress, worry, pain or anxiety are you suffering with?
Could you hand it to God? Perhaps you could draw around your hand and write inside that the thing you'd like God to help you with. This is a prayer
Trust it to God
God is a compassionate King who we can trust
Is there anything you try to hold away from God?
God longs to hear and see and know every challenge we have, how does that feel?
God knows our truth and responds to our prayers
“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth”. What does it look like for you to bring your rants and your frustration, your sadness and disappointment and all your struggles to God in prayer?
Prayer can be words, but it can also be colours scribbled on paper, or a nap in thanks.
Praise God
“My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord.”
Could you write a few sentences praising God about your week?
Perhaps you could write a poem would work, or say one word for each finger and thumb, or create a drawing full of joy.
Or maybe you'd like to listen to a song of praise and know that God hears your heart.
God’s Kingdom
What does ‘God’s Kingdom coming’ mean to you? Draw or write what comes into your mind
Below are some images from over the years that Psalm 145 reminded me about. Perhaps they might give you some ideas as well.
