I will sing a new song to you, O God;

Upon a ten-stringed harp I will play to you

Psalm 144:9 ESV

Psalm 144 was the focus for our Zoom sessions last month. A battle-hardened David begins by acknowledging God not only as his fortress and refuge, but also as the one who trains him for the battles he has to face. He pleads with God to show up, using powerful images from nature, such as thunder and smoking mountains. He then exclaims that he will sing a 'new' song, talking about how God rescues and looks with kindness over his people.

This got us thinking about what our 'new songs' might sound like. Several centuries have come and gone since this psalm was written, and God is still active, and living today in our struggles as well as our successes. God is still our shelter and our refuge, and still teaches and trains us for our battles that we face. Even today God can show up in unlikely moments and unlikely places- creating opportunities for us to create 'new songs' in our hearts.

Have you experienced God's love lately? Perhaps in the kindness of a friend, or the beauty of nature, or something you have noticed that has lifted your spirit? These experiences can help us to understand how God is with us 'in the now', hinting at new songs that our hearts can sing in worship. Perhaps these new songs can help to guard and protect our hearts, proving to be a valuable weapon when we are facing the struggles our daily lives can bring us.
