Who is this King of glory?
The LORD, strong and mighty,
the LORD, mighty in battle!
Psalm 24:8
This month we were exploring Psalm 24 together. It begins by reminding us of how our remarkable world and everything and everyone it contains was imagined and created by our loving Lord. John 1:3 (ESV) reminds us, ‘All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.’ We spent some time thinking about this- the sound of waterfalls, the feel and leaves of feathers, the glow of a sunset, the smell of rain in summer- all imagined and created by the founder of the world!
Later on the psalm urges gates and doors to be flung wide open in preparation for the ‘King of glory’- the ‘strong and mighty’ one. The founder of the world is coming to us! Imagine a gate with rusty hinges finally creaking open after many years, or a key to an ancient door being frantically searched for, as excitement mounts?
These were more than just images to the writer of the psalm, and to the ancient people who cherished it. The King of glory was coming to take his rightful, central place in the Temple and in society. This was also a call for all to prepare, and open their hearts and minds to the King of glory.
Our recent Advent and Christmas celebrations remind us once again of how the King of glory truly came to us. John 1:9 (ESV) reminds us, ‘The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.’ Born ‘little, weak and helpless’- as the carol puts it, his humility, grace, compassion and willingness to serve all, would challenge what people expected of a King. He would nonetheless show his strength and might through defeating death and sin and its power.
As we move into 2026 we hope and pray that our hearts and minds will be open as a community to the King of glory- strong and mighty. As he challenges us to draw closer to him, May we draw alongside those in need of him.
