May all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you!
May those who love your salvation say evermore,
'God is great!'
Psalm 70:4 (ESV)
During April we were exploring together another psalm of David's, Psalm 70. In these short verses, David begins by acknowledging how he needs God's help. He is in mortal danger, only too aware of people and situations around him, making his life difficult and painful.
Then, from looking at his surroundings, David lifts his gaze to God, as we can see in the verse above. He has experienced God's love and mercy, and understands what it feels like to have God as his saviour. He recognises his own weakness and incapabilities at the same moment as God's strength and compassion. He knows he is incapable of sorting anything out in his own strength- God is his only hope.
Thinking about this led us to consider what God brings to us when we call out, knowing that in our own strength, we are pretty weak! Like David discovered, there is something releasing about recognising our weaknesses before God. We may be broken, but the invitation to us is to bring to God this weakness, this brokenness. God's saving power, which brought the resurrection of Jesus, is then known to us. We can bring our despair, he can give us hope. We can bring our darkness, he can give us light. We can bring our confusion, he can give us peace.
Someone in our group mentioned this verse from Malachi. It talks about the 'Sun of Righteousness' mentioned in the last verse of a famous Christmas carol, and seemed to sum up our discussion.
But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healings in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.
Malachi 4:2 (ESV)
